There are many more types in the Csla.Core namespace, but they are designed for internal use by CSLA .NET and are not intended for use by code outside the framework. However, several of these types are important to understanding the structure of other framework classes, so I ll walk you through them.

There are a few operational considerations when working with WAL-enabled SQLite databases. These are primarily performance and recovery related.

If you find yourself struggling to extract a unique piece of information from a message (using the SoapContext class), and the message includes a Username Token security token, you can use a nonce-based token ID as a unique identifier. A nonce is simply a random cryptographic string that can be assigned as the ID value for the Username Token security token. When the service receives a request message, it can extract the nonce value from the security token and cache the value for the duration of the request message. These ID values are part of the message signature and cannot be spoofed. And because they are nonce values, it is highly unlikely that two request messages will coincidentally share the same ID values. However, this could happen if you choose to rely on the autogenerated ID value for the security token. Again, the burden remains on the service to cache information on incoming request messages. But if you need to take this approach, a nonce value is the simplest way to do so. Listing 7-5 shows how the client can assign a nonce value to a Username Token security token.

Earlier in the chapter I discussed BusinessBase(Of T) and its base class, BusinessBase. The BusinessBase class is the non-generic base class for all editable root and child objects.

We noted earlier that enabling WAL usually translates to better performance. Under our disadvantages, we outlined that for very large changes in data, or very long-running transactions, a slight drop in performance might result. Here s the background on how this can happen and what to do. With WAL enabled, you implicitly gain a performance advantage over rollback journaling because only one write is required to commit a transaction, instead of two (one to the database and rollback journal). However, until a checkpoint occurs that frees space in the WAL file, the file itself must keep growing as more and more changes are recorded. Normally this isn t an issue: someone will be the lucky committer who pushes WAL through the 1,000-page threshold for a checkpoint, and the WAL will clear, and the cycle will continue. But the checkpoint completes its work if it finds an end-point marker for any currently active reader. That means a very long-running transaction or read activity can keep the checkpoint from making progress, even on subsequent attempts. This in turn means the WAL file keeps growing in size, with commensurately longer seek times for new readers to find pages. Another performance consideration is how much work is triggered when a transaction hits the checkpoint threshold. You may find that the variable nature of lots of very fast transactions and then one slightly longer one that must perform the checkpoint work for its predecessors unattractive in some scenarios. For both of these performance hypotheticals, you are essentially weighing up read and write performance. Our recommended approach is to first remember that you can t have the best of both, so some compromise will be needed, and then if necessary use the sqlite3_wal_checkpoint()and sqlite3_wal_autocheckpoint() tools to balance the load and find a happy equilibrium.

Most collection types in CSLA .NET inherit from ExtendedBindingList, including BusinessListBase, ReadOnlyBindingList, and ReadOnlyListBase. ExtendedBindingList extends the BindingList(Of T) class from the System.ComponentModel namespace by adding a RemovingItem event and an AddRange() method. The BindingList(Of T) already raises a ListChanged event, but that occurs after an item has been removed from the collection and doesn t provide a reference to the item that is removed. The new RemovingItem event occurs while the item is being removed from the list and provides a reference to the item that is being removed. The AddRange() method allows you to add a range of items to the collection. It accepts an IEnumerable(Of T) and adds the items in that list to the end of the collection. This method can be used to merge two collections or to add more data to a collection over time. Finally, ExtendedBindingList implements the IsSelfBusy and IsBusy properties and other functionality that is required for asynchronous object persistence, as I discuss in 15.
