Many of the options listed in Table 5-3 involve floating-point operations. In order to apply the optimizations in question, the optimizer deviates from strict adherence to ISO and/or IEEE specifications for math functions in general and floating-point math in particular. In floating-point heavy applications, you might see significant performance improvements, but the trade-off is that you give up compatibility with established standards. In some situations, noncompliant math operations might be acceptable, but you are the only one who can make that determination.

Due to the wide variety of processor architectures GCC supports, I cannot begin to cover the processorspecific optimizations in this chapter. Appendix A covers, in detail, all of the processor-specific optimizations you can apply. So curious readers who know the details of their CPUs are encouraged to review the material there. In reality, though, the target-specific switches discussed in Appendix A are not properly optimizations in the traditional sense. Rather, they are options that give GCC more information about the type of system on which the code being compiled will run.
